Weekly Maritime Summary 23 - 29 September 2019

The Securewest Global Response Centre (GRC) recorded eleven maritime related incidents and one General Security Warning during the reporting period of 23-29 September 2019.

  • On 23-Sep-19 - Boarding - Anchored tanker SW of Lagos, Nigeria. Two Robbers boarded, razor wire broken, and vapour locks opened.

  • On 23-Sep-19 – Kidnapping – Two fishing vessels boarded 61nm ESE Sandakan port Malaysia. Personal effects stolen and three crew kidnapped.

  • On 23-Sep-19 – Boarding – Anchored tanker in Mabini Anchorage, Philippines. Crew noticed attempted boarding during rounds.

  • On 23-Sep-19 – Robbery – Anchored tanker in Kakinada Anchorage, India. Four robbers escaped with ship stores.

  • On 24-Sep-19 – Drugs Interdiction – U.S Coast Guard NW of Columbia. 12,000lbs of cocaine interdicted.

  • On 25-Sep-19 – Robbery – At dock in Prickly Bay, Grenada. Outboard stolen.

  • On 25-Sep-19 – Robbery - Anchored tanker aprx 40nm ENE of Singapore. Robbers stole ships equipment and escaped.

  • On 25-Sep- 19 – Robbery – Anchored tanker aprx 35nm NE of Singapore. Robbers escaped with a mooring rope.

  • On 27-Sep-19 – Migrant Refugee Incident – Capsized migrant vessel near Chios island, Greece. Two women and five children died.

  • On 28-Sep-19 – Migrant Refugee Incident – In the English Channel eight migrants found hidden in a tanker’s engine room. Tanker headed to Cherbourg and migrants taken ashore.

  • On 28-Sep-19 – Migrant Refugee Incident – Capsizes migrant vessel off the coast of Libya. 50 migrants affected; casualties unconfirmed.

  • On 29-Sep-19 – General Security Warning – Terrorist Threat Warning in Malaysia.

Key:

Boarding IconBoarding: Unauthorized boarding of a vessel by persons not part of its complement without successfully taking control of the vessel.
Kidknapping IconKidnapping: Unauthorized forcible removal of persons belonging to the vessel from it.
Robbery Incident IconRobbery: Theft from a vessel or from persons aboard the vessel.

Drugs interdiction iconDrugs Interdiction: Focused on interrupting illegal drugs smuggled by sea, usually large amounts of drugs are seized.

Migrants and refugee incidents Migrant and Refugee Incident: This could involve Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, or information about a boat capsizing and people drowning, or an attack on the group.

RobberyGeneral Security Warning: Incidents which do not fit in the other categories, but enhance the situational awareness, e.g. flag state advisories or an attack on a non- commercial vessel such as a warship.
